Nagpur Metro Rail to be powered by solar energy

The Nagpur Metro Rail project, currently under construction in the city of Nagpur in Maharashtra state, aims to get around two-thirds of its power requirement from solar

photovoltaic (PV) panels installed on the roofs, boundary walls and viaducts of the rail network, as well as on adjacent vacant land.

The solar arrays will be installed by a company to be selected through a competitive bidding process, under a so-called RESCO (renewable energy service company) model. Under the model, the RESCO will invest its own money in setting up the solar arrays and will sell the power back to the Metro at a 25-year set rate.

Brijesh Dixit, managing director of the Nagpur Metro, told that the rail system is being designed to accommodate the solar arrays, and that a survey to determine the best layout is currently underway and will be completed in about a month.
